The Castilleja girls soccer team opened its West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) season with a 1-0 victory over host Pinewood on Thursday. Celeste Woloshyn scored the lone goal for the Gators (1-0, 3-2) with an assist from fellow sophomore Sarah Abramowitz. The game was even in the first half overall, but Pinewood (0-2, 1-9) was dominant over the last 20 minutes and only glaring misses and stalwart defending from Castilleja allowed the only goal to be the difference.
"We definitely had more of the game and, especially in the second half, put them continuously on their heels," said Pinewood coach Michael Tetzlaff. "But, as often in soccer it is not necessarily the team which plays better and has more scoring chances that wins; Castilleja made the most out of their limited scoring opportunities, whereas we just could not find the back of the net. But it was rewarding to see our team pass well, step up the physical play, and restrict Castilleja to mostly their own half in the second 40 minutes. It bodes well for our future games in the Foothill Division."
