The Palo Alto girls came out strong against the defending CCS Division II champion Los Altos and came away with a 2-2 deadlock to open the SCVAL De Anza Division soccer season on Wednesday. With her ball skills, Paly sophomore Jacey Pederson advanced the ball down field through defenders, passed off to Katie Foug, who fed Heidi Moeser and she put it quickly past the Los Altos goalie for a 1-0 lead just five minutes in. Los Altos tightened up the defense for the next 15minutes, but still did not have a shot on frame. At 23 minutes in, Paly strung together a drive that exemplifies teamwork. At midfield, on a pass to Nika Woodfill, she faked the trap and let the ball pass by to her teammate, Sunny Lyu, who heel-passed to Pederson, who advanced the ball to the 18- yard box -- drawing three defenders. Pederson passed off to Moeser, who tapped in for her second goal of the half. Los Altos had one opportunity with two minutes until half, but Paly goalie Dhara Yu made the save. Paly took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
The second half was uneventful for 15 minutes until Paly was called for a handball in the box, leading to a red card, an ejection, and a PK for Los Altos that Katie Winters converted for a score. With 25 minutes remaining in the match, Paly was now playing with 10 and a one-goal lead. And that’s just what the Vikings did for 14 minutes until they put together a run of their own culminating with Nika Woodfill turning and sending in a hard shot near post. But, the Los Altos goalie made a great save to keep the match at 2-1 Palo Alto. With five minutes remaining, the Eagles' Rebecca Andrews lobbed a shot cross frame over the head of Paly’s goalie that hit the far post and just bounced in to tie the match at 2.
