The Menlo School boys won their first soccer match of the season, 1-0, over host Carmel on Thursday in nonleague action. The Knights (1-2-2) started the game on the front foot, dominating possession and winning the ball back deep in the Padres' half. Their sustained pressure led to numerous chances but they often fired over or wide of the net, unable to test the Carmel keeper. Menlo senior forward Travis Chambers, senior captain John Strong and sophomore forward Will Chisholm all had dangerous chances that they were unable to convert in the first half.

In the second half, Carmel came back into the game, dominating possession but unable to create significant chances. Menlo sophomore defenders Andrew Arnold and Michael Quezada and senior captain Justin Wang did a great job of protecting junior goalkeeper Alex Moore as he earned his second consecutive shutout. Ultimately, the Knights found the breakthrough with just under 10 minutes to play in the game. Sophomore forward Tyler McGraw got the ball in front of the Carmel defense and played in Strong down the left wing. Strong fired a fierce effort which the Padres' goalkeeper could only parry, leaving Chisholm alone in front to bury the rebound for the winner.
