The Menlo School boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Milpitas in the final group stage game at the Oak Grove Gold Cup on Saturday. The Knights (0-2-1) started strongly and looked the better side in the first 20 minutes, creating numerous chances but unable to capitalize on their overwhelming possession. Early on sophomore forward Will Chisholm seemed to be brought down inside the box while in the process of shooting but no foul was called. A few minutes later Chisholm had another attempt on goal, which the Milpitas keeper did well to save. In the 19th minute, Milpitas scored the opener on its first shot after barely venturing into the Menlo half to that point. A Trojan midfielder found himself unmarked at the top of the box after a Menlo turnover in midfield and produced a clinical finish into the bottom corner of the net. The goal against the run of play deflated the Knights and Milpitas controlled the action for the rest of the half.
Menlo started the second half similarly to the first and was level within a few minutes. Senior captain Justin Wang was fouled in the box following a Knights' corner kick and this time the officials did not hesitate to call the infraction. Sophomore midfielder Keaton Shiveley stepped up to take it. His attempt caromed off the post and fell to Chisholm who calmly put it by the Trojans' keeper. From there the game went back and forth with numerous physical challenges in midfield. Midway though the half the Trojans earned a free kick just outside the Knights' box. The ball was played across the six-yard line and a Trojans' player was first to react with numerous Menlo defenders looking on as he tapped it into the open net. As Menlo pushed for the equalizer in vain Milpitas scored a third goal on a counter attack with just a few minutes to play.
