Getting a goal from Fernando Rodriguez in the 32 minute of the second half, off an assist from Roberto Sotelo, Palo Alto held on for a 1-0 victory over Menlo School in the second round of the Oak Grove Gold Cup boys' soccer tournament at Paly on Thursday. The match was close throughout with neither team having many shooting opportunities until the last 10 minutes, when Paly (3-2-1) scored followed by Menlo pressing hard to get the equalizer. Paly keeper Tony Maherajh made a couple of nice stops toward the end of the game when Menlo (0-1-1) had three shots on goal in the last six minutes.

Palo Alto regrouped at halftime and looked like a different team to start the second half. The Vikings dominated possession for the 15 minutes, moving the ball quickly on the ground and keeping the Menlo defense under pressure. They were unfortunate not to take the lead when a corner was not dealt with properly by the Knights' defense, but the Vikings somehow fired over the crossbar from a few yards out. Menlo came back into the game as the half went on and had chances of their own in what proved a thrilling finish. Will Chisholm and fellow sophomore Tyler McGraw each had a couple of chances in the Palo Alto box but were unable to capitalize.

"I am proud of our boys today," said Menlo head coach Marc Kerrest. "We have a very young team and the performance they put in today is something to be proud of. We talked all week about outworking our opponents and passing the ball around in midfield and we did both very well today. If we continue to progress at this rate we will have a very successful season."

Menlo will play Milpitas in the final group stage game of the Oak Grove tourney on Saturday.
