Menlo-Atherton defeated host Palo Alto, 2-1, in a nonleague girls’ soccer match on a cold Thursday evening. The Bears (1-0-1) took the lead in the 10th minute when junior Amanda Wiseman headed in the first corner kick of the game from sophomore Kelsey Reed. Paly equalized in the 17th minute when sophomore Nika Woodfill was able to finish a shot from junior Aoi Sugihara after it deflected off junior keeper Jaqueline Foody's first save attempt. Deadlocked at halftime, M-A broke the tie when senior Cayla Stillman converted a penalty kick for the go-ahead goal. Despite a strong attack from Paly in the second half that forced Foody to make six more saves, the M-A defense -- anchored by seniors Julia Stoner and Kelley Eason along with sophomores Reed and Jordan Olesen -- held tight to seal the victory.
