Varsity Girls Soccer
Menlo School 1, Menlo-Atherton 1
Date of competition: Tuesday, December 3, 2013
Neighborhood rivals Menlo School and Menlo-Atherton opened their respective seasons in girls' soccer with a 1-1 nonleague deadlock on Tuesday on a breezy and frigid afternoon on the Knights' field. Menlo took the lead in the 18th minute when senior Emma LaPorte converted from seven yards out off a corner kick by senior Chandler Wickers. Menlo had seven corner kicks overall as the Knights created numerous opportunities during the match.
Menlo-Atherton came right back and scored in the 21st minute on a penalty kick by freshman Katie Guenin, who had just come off the bench to replace sophomore forward Talia Missan, who was fouled in the box and injured on the play. The second half resulted in a scoreless battle despite the fact Menlo hit the post twice while out-shooting the Bears, 11-8, for the game. Menlo sophomore keeper Schuyler Tilney-Volk had seven saves and M-A junior Jacqueline Foody had eight. Junior Tess Batchelder and freshman Claire McFarland stood out on defense for Menlo.
