History repeated itself at the 2013 Central Coast Section Team Tournament in girls' tennis on Thursday at Courtside Club in Los Gatos. Unfortunately for Menlo School, that's not a good thing as the top-seeded Knights (24-2) dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 3 seed Monta Vista (21-5), ending a 24-match win streak by Menlo. The last time Menlo came into the playoffs as the No. 1-seeded team, which was in 2003, the Knights also were upended by Monta Vista. Menlo's loss to the Matadors is the fourth in as many years in CCS competition. Monta Vista previously knocked the Knights out in the semifinals from 2010-12.

Thursday's match came down to No. 1 singles, where Menlo junior Liz Yao dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Aiswarya Sankar. The match actually started Wednesday before rain halted it in the first set. By the time Yao's final forehand sailed long, it had taken 2 1/2 hours to complete. Menlo had tied the match at 3 when senior co-captain Paulina Golikova and Melissa Tran won their No. 3 doubles match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Menlo, which was making its first appearance in the finals since 2006, didn't have much time to dwell on the setback as the Knights headed to Sacramento on Friday for the CIF NorCal Championships. Menlo is the No. 2 seed and could face Monta Vista again in the finals on Saturday at the Natomas Racquet Club.
