The Lady Oaks continued its dominance in Cal Pac play on Thursday night with a four-set victory over visiting Pacific Union College, 25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 25-10.
The win was the fifth-straight for Menlo who improves to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in Cal Pac play.
Pacific Union went ahead 2-0 in the first set before the Lady Oaks came roaring back on the serve of Courtney Calicdan and ran off eight-straight points to take a 8-2 lead. They never looked back from there and finished off the Pioneers 25-20 in the first.
Set two was much of the same for Menlo who led by as many as eight points before closing it out 25-19 to improve to 2-0 in the match.
Pacific Union wasn’t ready to go down without a fight and battled back for an impressive come-from-behind win in the third set.
Impressive offensive performances from Menlo's Courtney Calicdan and Nicole Yap, who notched 18 and 16 kills, helped give the Oaks the victory.
Despite dropping the third game, Menlo rallied back and emphatically slammed the door in the fourth set to down the Pioneers 25-10 and secure the four-set win.
Menlo head coach Atlee Hubbard was happy with the way her team controlled the match and maintained its composure throughout.
“Pacific Union is a good ball control team and it was a nice test for our offense,” said Hubbard. “I thought we controlled the level of the match and even though we lost set three the team was composed and adjusted well in the fourth set.”
Courtney Wong had 10 kills. Kelly Sung was again impressive from her setter position with a match-best 47 assists on the night. Yap added a match-best 21 digs, followed by Calicdan with 18.
The Lady Oaks remain at home on Saturday for a conference tilt with UC Merced at 7pm.
