Anna Beardman singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to carry Stanford to a 4-3 Pac-10 softball victory over visiting California on Friday night. The Cardinal (5-5, 39-7) fell behind by 3-0 before tying the game and forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Erin Howe led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Michelle Smith. Shannon Koplitz walked, setting the stage for Beardman's game-winning hit. Missy Penna pitched all eight innings, limiting the Bears (3-7, 35-7) to just two hits. She struck out eight. The Cardinal has now won five consecutive Pac-10 games. Beardman led Stanford with a 2-for-3 performance while fellow senior Erin Howe reached on three of her four at-bats. Koplitz, a sophomore, provided the pivotal hit that tied the game in the sixth inning. Penna threw her 26th complete game for Stanford while improving to 27-6 on the year, matching the second-highest single-season win total in school history. The teams resume their three-game series on Saturday at Stanford at 1 p.m., before finishing up Sunday in Berkeley, also at 1 p.m.
