Womens Water Polo
Stanford's , Maggie Steffens
Date of competition: Monday, June 17, 2013
It was a whirlwind year for Stanford freshman Maggie Steffens from Danville. Shortly after leading the United States to a gold medal in the Summer Olympics, where she scored a tournament-best 21 goals, Steffens enrolled at Stanford for the fall quarter. She immediately began training with the two-time defending NCAA champion Cardinal women's water polo team, and helped it reach the national title match against USC, where Stanford fell in a heartbreaker, 10-9, in quadruple overtime. The Cardinal finished with a 29-3 record and Steffens scored 60 goals, second most on the team, and was selected All-MPSF First-Team. Then it was down to Southern California to train with the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team, which recently lost in the semifinals of the FINA Women's Water Polo World League Super Final in Beijing, China. Steffens is now training to compete in next month's FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Despite her hectic schedule, she thrived at Stanford and especially enjoyed making new friends and rooting on the Rose Bowl champion Cardinal football team.
