The Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep boys' soccer teams proved to be more than just rivals this season. They are also Central Coast Section Division III co-champions following their 1-1 deadlock in the championship match Saturday at Oak Grove High in San Jose.

The No. 5-seeded Gators (18-2-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half when junior Andrew Segre curved a shot past Menlo keeper Timmy Costa with 4:45 remaining before intermission. In the second half, Menlo senior Max Parker was taken down in the penalty box by SHP keeper Hugo Sanchez, with Costa moving from goalie to take the penalty kick, which he converted for a 1-1 deadlock with 24:30 remaining in regulation.

The match ended tied in regulation, with the teams then playing two 10-minute overtime periods with neither squad scoring -- despite having opportunities. The match ended there, rather than going to penalty kicks, with No. 10-seed Menlo (15-5-4) earning its first-ever section title and Sacred Heart Prep notching its eighth in program history and the first since moving from the fall to winter for the 2008-09 season.
