Date of competition: Friday, January 25, 2013
The Menlo School boys' varsity soccer team scored a late goal to beat visiting Priory, 1-0, in West Bay Athletic League action on Friday. Menlo (6-1, 9-3-1) gained slightly in the league race as first-place Sacred Heart Prep (6-0-1) tied King's Academy.
Menlo controlled play in the first half creating several scoring chances but were unable to take the lead. Senior Ryan Karle was unfortunate not to put the Knights ahead on a few different occasions but the Priory keeper was always up to the task.
Menlo started the second half with its usual fluid passing but Priory defended well. Priory had a couple of chances to take the lead but Menlo senior captain Tim Costa made some key saves to keep the game level, recording his eighth shutout of the season in the process.
Menlo broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when sophomore Kyle Perez played Karle down the left wing. Karle fired a shot that deflected off his defender, looping over the goalie into the far side of the net. Menlo outshot Priory 16-5.
