Date of competition: Thursday, January 17, 2013
Defending champion Menlo School took over sole possession of first place in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) girls' soccer race with a 3-0 victory over visiting Castilleja on Thursday. The Knights improved to 4-0 in league (6-2-4 overall) and opened a one-point lead over second-place Sacred Heart Prep (3-0-2).
Menlo's first goal came in the game's sixth minute when junior Emma LaPorte chipped the ball onto the head of junior Lindsay Karle, whose precise header found the corner of the goal from eight yards out. The remainder of the half was scoreless. Sophomore Alexandra Walker, in particular, created some good opportunities for Menlo but the Knights could not capitalize on them.
Five minutes into the second half LaPorte fed junior Chandler Wickers, whose 18 yard shot got past the goalkeeper. In the 10th minute, junior Amanda McFarland found junior Sienna Stritter and she blasted a 20-yard ball high into the corner of the goal to push the lead to 3-0.
Menlo's backline of Walker, senior Hannah Rubin, senior Rachel Pinsker, sophomore Jamie Corley, and sophomore Lizzie Lacy combined with freshman keeper Schuyler Tilney-Volk to earn the shutout. Tilney-Volk made five saves while Menlo outshot Castilleja (0-2-2 league) by 12-6.
Menlo's next match is Tuesday at home against Sacred Heart Prep at 2:45 p.m.
