In a battle between the defending Central Coast Section boys’ tennis champion and perhaps the state’s best team prior to the section tournament, Sacred Heart Prep remained undefeated this season with a 4-3 nonleague victory over visiting Menlo. The Gators (5-0) had a 26-0 record last season before losing in the CCS semifinals. Menlo (4-3) won last season’s CCS title after beating Bellarmine, which ended SHP’s season in the semifinals. Friday’s game was merely the first of many tests for both teams before they advance to the CCS tournament once again. The Gators clinched the victory when John Parsons and John Michael Hansen finished off Menlo’s Ryan Duggal and Andrew Carlisle at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. The team’s normal No. 1 singles players, Menlo’s Daniel Hoffman and SHP’s Jamie Hutter, instead met at No. 2 singles. Hoffman pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 win. At No. 1, Jamin Ball of Menlo downed Erik Blumenkranz, 6-2, 6-4. The Gators, however, took the No. 3 and 4 singles with Billy McCall and freshman Andrew Malozask producing straight-set wins. SHP also won at No. 2 doubles. The Gators wrapped up the win with two matches still in progress, both of which were won by Menlo.
