Varsity Boys Water Polo
St. Ignatius 8, Menlo School 7
Date of competition: Saturday, November 10, 2012
For the first time in 16 years, the Menlo School boys' water polo team failed to reach the Central Coast Section Division II semifinals after dropping an 8-7 decision to No. 7 seed St. Ignatius in the quarterfinals Saturday at St. Francis. The No. 2-seeded Knights (14-11) appeared headed to the semis after grabbing a 5-0 lead in the middle of the first quarter. St. Ignatius (17-12) then tightened up its defense behind great goalie play and took advantage of rare Menlo mistakes.
After a 4-0 second quarter, St. Ignatius maintained the lead and never lost it. Menlo had goals from six different players, with freshman Chris Xi being the only to score more than one. John Wilson came up with 10 saves for the Knights, who last won a CCS Division II title in 2010. Menlo missed leading scorer Nick Bisconti, a sophomore who suffered a season-ending injury late in the season.
