Menlo opened its PAL Bay Division season and defense of its league title with a convincing 8-4 victory over host Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday. The Knights (1-0, 4-2) jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead behind goals from James Balassone, Toby Espinosa, Gerrard Clark and two by Alex Avery. The Bears scored three unanswered goals -- from Matt Bogott, Jed Springer and Jimmy Peck -- to cut their deficit to 6-4 just into the fourth quarter, but Menlo rallied with goals from Balassone and Hudnall and a swarming defense to shut down the Bears late.
