Strong pitching, smart at-bats and tough defense earned the Menlo Park Legends a 6-2 nonleague baseball victory over the visiting Alameda Merchants on Wednesday at Canada College in Redwood City. It was the fifth straight win for the Legends, who toppled the San Francisco Seals on Tuesday, 12-1, to open the week.
Michael Olmstead started the game, striking out two batters and allowing no runs. Darren Gidley came in to pitch and struck out three more, allowing two runs, only one earned. Alon Leichman closed the game in the ninth, striking out one of the three batters he faced.
"Our pitching has been stellar to say the least,” said Menlo Park manager David Klein, whose team has allowed only five runs during the past five games. “Whatever we’re doing on the hill, we’re doing it right."
The Legends host Pro Player Baseball on Friday at Canada College at 5 p.m.
