Stanford righthander Mark Appel was named a first team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association on Wednesday. Appel completed his 2012 season at the Super Regional last weekend, finishing his junior season at 10-2 with a 2.56 ERA over 16 starts. The first team All-Pac-12 selection was named the Stanford Regional MVP after an 11-strikeout, four-hitter against Fresno State two weeks ago.
Appel struck out at least 10 in eight starts this year, four against the top-10, which included a career-best 14 earlier this season against Rice. He was also a first-round pick, going No. 8 to the Pirates in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft. He was also named a first team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
