The Palo Alto boys' 400 relay team remained consistent, but needed to be faster in the finals at Saturday's CIF State Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High in Clovis.

The Palo Alto team of senior Tremaine Kirkman, junior Jayshawn Gates-Mouton, senior Morris Gates-Mouton and junior E.J. Floreal clocked 41.72 for the third-fastest time in school history. The time, however, got the Vikings only seventh place and two points in the fast race.

Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks won the race in 41.13, the same time clocked by runner-up and state leader Rio Mesa. Kennedy (Richmond) was the top NorCal finisher, taking fifth in 41.47. Palo Alto finished its season by running 41.56, 41.70 and 41.72. Had Palo Alto equalled its school record (41.56), the Vikings would have only moved up one spot to sixth.

After anchoring the 400 relay, Floreal came back to earn a medal by finishing fourth in the 100 in 10.70. Ironically, the winning time of 10.52 by Khalfani Muhammad of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) tied Floreal's personal best. Floreal wound up with the No. 2 NorCal time, finishing behind runner-up Andre McBride of San Leandro, who ran 10.60.

Floreal wrapped up his busy day by finishing third in the 200 in 21.38. Notre Dame's Muhammad won his second individual race while clocking 21.15. Floreal, whose school record is 21.16, would have needed another school mark to win the race.

Following the 200, Palo Alto was in fifth place in the team standings with 13 points.
