Three Palo Alto wrestlers and one from Menlo-Atherton saw their seasons end on Friday during the first day of the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.

Palo Alto’s trio of qualifiers all failed to win a match, with 132-pounder Nick Ortiz eliminated after a 1-0 loss in the closing seconds of triple overtime. Fellow senior Kalen Gans (160) lost his first match, 4-3, while sophomore Andrew Frick (195) was defeated, 5-3, in the consolation bracket.

Menlo-Atherton senior Andre Delagnes, the Central Coast Section 120-pound champ, posted a 7-0 decision plus a second-period pin to open the tournament. In his third-round match, Delagnes was tied in the late going until his opponent scored four points. Delagnes scored two points on a reversal before time ran out and he dropped a 6-4 decision. Delagnes dropped down into the consolation bracket and suffered a 10-7 loss to the same opponent who eliminated him last year.
