It's called sudden death, after a soccer match has gone through regulation plus two mandatory overtime periods. For the Palo Alto boys' soccer team, Friday's 1-0 loss to No. 3 seed Pajaro Valley was sudden disappointment. After 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute mandatory overtime periods, it came down to a pair of sudden-death periods. After that, Pajaro Valley and No. 8 Palo Alto would share the Central Coast Section Division II title. But, it wasn't to be. With less than two minutes gone in the first "golden goal" period, Pajaro Valley (22-2-2) took advantage of a corner kick that bounced around in front of the Paly cage and knocked it in. "Everyone kind of jumped up to get it, and the ball hit the ground," said Paly junior keeper Peter Johnson. "I have like four or five guys in front of me. I didn't ever see the ball. It's just one of those things . . . You can't go that long without someone scoring. Someone has to, unfortunately it wasn't us." Paly, playing in its second straight CCS Division II title match, finished the season with a 14-5-6 record.
