Michelle Smith led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run and the Stanford sotball team beat Oklahoma, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in the Palm Springs Classic. Smith had two hits and drove in two runs as the 13th-ranked Cardinal (13-0) set a school record for the best start to a season. The ninth-ranked Sooners (9-3) lost for the first time in eight games, and Oklahoma pitcher D.J. Mathias suffered her first setback of the season after six wins. Missy Penna (10-0) pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts, allowing one earned run. Stanford plays UNLV on Saturday at 1 p.m.
