Erin Howe singled in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and Maddy Coon broke it open with a grand slam as the Stanford softball team downed Florida Atlantic, 9-3, in the first game of the Palm Springs Classic on Thursday. The 13th-ranked Cardinal (11-0) plays Fordham on Friday at 10 a.m.

Notes from the game:
Stanford took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh when Anna Beardman singled home pinch runner Autumn Albers and Alissa Haber followed with an RBI single. Florida Atlantic scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Both teams had the bases loaded with less than two outs in the sixth and failed to score. Missy Penna struck out 14, walked three and allowed four hits.
