The Menlo School boys’ soccer team scored first and then had to rally for a 2-2 draw against Crystal Springs in a physical West Bay Athletic League match Friday in Atherton. Junior Ryan Karle got the Knights started, taking a throw-in from fellow junior Beau Baldwin, and crossing it to the left corner in the 19th minute. The Gryphons struck 3 1/2 minutes later for a 1-1 tie, then took the lead on a goal 58 seconds into the second half.

“Every player pushes the whole match. They don’t pack it in if they’re down,” Menlo coach Mark Arya said of his players. “They created some good chances to score, but we’re not finishing. It’s definitely something that we can work on. ”

Nearly four minutes into the second half, Karle converted the direct free kick. Menlo had several shots on goal thereafter, including two in the final minute but couldn't find the back of the net while moving to 0-1-1 in league (3-1-3 overall). Crystal Springs is 0-1-1 in league and 4-1-1 overall.
