Missy Penna pitched a three-hitter and Erin Howe doubled in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run in Stanford's 1-0 victory over Long Beach State on Sunday at the San Diego Invitational. The Cardinal (4-0) host St. Mary's on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Notes from the game:
Melisa Koutz doubled to open the seventh for Stanford. Erin Howe followed with her second double of the game to score pinchrunner Michele Schroeder. Missy Penna struck out seven and did not walk a batter for her third consecutive shutout. Penna recorded 27 strikeouts in 21 innings during the San Diego Invitational. She allowed just five hits, no walks and opened the tournament with a no-hitter. She threw 95 pitches, 62 of which were strikes.
