Varsity Boys Water Polo
Mountain View 6, Palo Alto 3
Date of competition: Friday, November 4, 2011
The Palo Alto boys' water polo team saw its hopes for a possible title in the SCVAL De Anza Division Tournament disappearing a 6-3 upset loss to No. 3 seed Mountain View on Friday at Gunn High. The Vikings (15-11) came in seeded No. 2.
Mountain View grabbed a 6-0 lead after three quarters as Paly struggled on offense while converting just three of 34 shots, including just 1-for-13 on power plays. The Spartans were 2-of-2 on power plays and made their lone penalty shot. Senior Aaron Zelinger scored twice for Paly with sophomore Bret Pinsker adding a solo tally.
Mountain View advances to the championship game on Saturday at Gunn at 6 p.m., while Paly must settle for the third-place game at 4:40 p.m. To maintain its position as the second-place team in the league, Palo Alto must finish third while Mountain View loses in the final. This would result in a tie in points (11 apiece), with the placement nod for CCS going to Paly, which leads the head-to-head series with Mountain View, 2-1.
