Menlo School senior Daniel Pugliese remained unbeaten against league competition this season while Sacred Heart Prep moved up from last year’s third-place finish to capture team honors at the West Bay Athletic League cross-county championships on Friday over the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont. Pugliese ran a season best of 16:02.3 on the course, eclipsing his previous best of 16:10. He won by 14 seconds over Sacred Heart Prep senior Zach Kaplan (16:16.3), who led the Gators to a 2-6-12-14-15 finish and the team crown with 49 points.

Menlo was hoping to defend its title and looked in good shape when sophomore Matt Myers took third in 16:29.0 and junior Andrew Schmitt finished fifth in 16:46.2. The next two Knights, however, ran 19th and 28th to dash those hopes.

Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo and fourth-place Priory all qualified their teams to the Central Coast Section Championships on Nov. 12, also at Crystal Springs.
