The Gunn girls' water polo team dropped out of a first-place tie in the SCVAL De Anza Division following a tough 6-5 overtime loss to host Los Altos on Tuesday night. The Titans fell to 5-1 in league (7-6 overall) while the Eagles improved to 6-0 (10-4). The teams will meet again on Oct. 27 at Gunn on Senior Day.

The Titans gave up a game-tying goal with 34 seconds to play as the match ended 4-4 in regulation. Gunn then gave up two quick goals in the first of two three-minute overtime periods. The Titans converted a five-meter penalty shot with 36 seconds left in the second extra period to make it 6-5.

"When we looked up, however, the desk had made an egregious mistake and the clock showed only 18 seconds left," said Gunn coach Mark Hernandez. "This meant that Los Altos did not have to shoot, and that they would not have to turn over the ball. As a result, Los Altos held the ball for the remaining 18 seconds, and won the game. Had the desk stopped the clock when they should have, we would have had at least four seconds to call a play and run one last play."
