Ryan Lochte, Rebecca Soni and the men’s 800 free relay all won gold medals for the United States on Friday at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Lochte won his third gold of the meet in the men’s 200-meter backstroke, turning in a time of 1:52.96. Soni won her second gold medal of the meet in the women’s 200 breast, her time a 2:21.47. Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, Ricky Berens and Lochte then capped the night for the Americans with a gold in the 4x200m free relay in 7:02.67.
Tyler Clary also won a bronze medal for the U.S. in the 200 back in 1:54.69. In addition to the medals, Missy Franklin also set an American record in the semifinals of the women’s 200 back in 2:05.90.
The U.S. medal count after day six stands at 20 – 10 gold, four silver and six bronze. It leads all nations in both gold medals and total medals won.
Many of the same U.S. medalists will be competing in the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships that begin Tuesday at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. Lochte, Clary, Vanderkaay, Berens and Franklin are included in that group.
