The Palo Alto Oaks picked a bad time to lose its first game of the season, dropping a 1-0 decision to the NorCal Longhorns in the opening round of the AABC NorCal State Playoffs on Friday morning at Baylands Athletic Center. The loss forced the Oaks to play a second-round game on Friday afternoon in San Jose.
PaloAlto (14-1) got the leadoff hitter aboard in four of the seven innings, but failed to get him home. The Oaks also struck out 11 times and twice failed to get a sacrifice bunt down with a runner at first.
The Oaks seemingly started out well when Paly grad Evan Warner led off the game with an infield hit. Allen Stiles followed with a single to center, moving Warner to third with no outs. Stiles, however, was caught stealing and the next two Palo Alto hitters struck out to end the scoring threat.
In the fourth, Nick Borg led off with a single to center and Anthony Bona was hit by a pitch. Will Klein, however, couldn't move the runners along and wound up striking out, as did the next two hitters to end Palo Alto's best opportunity.
Alex Sortwell singled to lead off the fifth and reached third with two out, but again the Oaks couldn't get the run home.
The Longhorns strung together three straight singles in the bottom of the first for the game's only run. After that, the Longhorns managed only one hit off Oaks' ace Matt Campbell, who finished with a four-hitter and seven strikeouts but failed to get any offensive support.
