The Gunn boys' soccer team picked a good time to end its five-year non-winning streak to rival Palo Alto, pretty much ending the Vikings' hopes for a SCVAL De Anza Division title with a 1-0 victory on Friday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex. Junior Ryan Wood scored the game-winner after a throw-in by teammate David Light deflected off a Paly defender and dropped in front of the cage at the 36:00 mark, with Wood knocking it home. Gunn's last win over Paly came during the 2003 season. The loss dropped Paly to 5-4-1 in league (10-4-5 overall) while Gunn improved to 3-6-2 (8-9-2) and probably saved itself from being demoted into the SCVAL El Camino Division next season as the Titans remained ahead of last-place Saratoga. Paly falls to third behind Los Gatos and Milpitas in the race for three automatic CCS berths. The first half was tightly fought with neither team having significant scoring threats. Paly came out strong in the second half having a number of near goals. In the end, Paly had 19 shots to Gunn's six. Gunn junior keeper Joey Welch had a good game and made several diving saves to stop Paly's attacks. Jenner Fox and Adam Zernik had solid games controlling the midfield with several near goals. Kevin Ashworth and John Christopherson had exceptional defensive games with Ashworth shutting down Gunn's attack. Sterling Hancock, Scott Baer, Boris Burkov and Calvin Parshad helped control the Vikings, who have two matches remaining on the road while Gunn has one to finish the season.
