The Gunn boys' soccer team picked a good time to end its five-year non-winning streak to rival Palo Alto, pretty much ending the Vikings' hopes for a SCVAL De Anza Division title with a 1-0 victory on Friday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex. Junior Ryan Wood scored the game-winner after a throw-in by teammate David Light deflected off a Paly defender and dropped in front of the cage at the 36:00 mark, with Wood knocking it home. Gunn's last win over Paly came during the 2003 season. The loss dropped Paly to 5-4-1 in league (10-4-5 overall) while Gunn improved to 3-6-2 (8-9-2) and probably saved itself from being demoted into the SCVAL El Camino Division next season as the Titans remained ahead of last-place Saratoga. Paly falls to third behind Los Gatos and Milpitas in the race for three automatic CCS berths. The first half was tightly fought with neither team having significant scoring threats. Paly came out strong in the second half having a number of near goals. In the end, Paly had 19 shots to Gunn's six. Gunn junior keeper Joey Welch had a good game and made several diving saves to stop Paly's attacks. Jenner Fox and Adam Zernik had solid games controlling the midfield with several near goals. Kevin Ashworth and John Christopherson had exceptional defensive games with Ashworth shutting down Gunn's attack. Sterling Hancock, Scott Baer, Boris Burkov and Calvin Parshad helped control the Vikings, who have two matches remaining on the road while Gunn has one to finish the season.

I thought it was a hard fought, intense, physical rivalry game. Gunn hadn't beaten Paly in years. It did get a bit chippy at times, but what do you expect. My high school games v. our archrival were every bit as edgy. Paly had plenty of chances to win. On to CCS!

Both teams were playing dirty. Gunn was the unlucky one that got called for the fouls. The slide tackle against their goalie was an accident seeing how it was a 50-50 ball. Peter had no chance on that goal by the way. I saw him diving right so i kicked it left. That is how the game is played. I admit that game was a little physical and i admit at times are team was bad, but both teams played a good hard game and in the end, one team came out on top. Maybe not the best team, but the harder working team. The chances of getting relgated are high but there is also a chance of not getting relegated. We will see what happens.
