The Palo Alto Oaks opened its 61st baseball season with two wins against Sacramento teams in nonleague games on Sunday at Baylands Athletic Center. The Oaks opened up against the Sacremento Legends and beat them 12-2 by way of the 10-run mercy rule. Brant Norlander, who just returned from Temple University, picked up the win going 4 2/3 of the five-inning game. Norlander struck out 11 while giving up three hits and two runs all in the final inning.
Newcomers Alex Sortwell (Canada JC) and Sam Wilkens (U. Arkansas at Monticello) had key hits for the Oaks. Sortwell singled in his first at-bat as an Oak and later hit a two-run homer well over the left-field fence. Wilkens had a two-run triple. Tyler Finley had three sharp singles in the contest.
In the second game, the Oaks were matched up against Pro Player Instruction, also from Sacramento. Matt Campbell was his usual masterful self giving up only hit and no runs in his five innings. However, the Oaks were not able to score until the sixth inning while posting a 2-0 triumph. Greg Matson picked up the win with two innings of relief work. In the sixthh, Allen Stiles (Canada, heading to Temple) led off with a walk. Newcomer Joe McGlaughlin (Sonoma State) singled to left and the Oaks were in business. After a strikeout, a passed ball put runners on second and third with one out. Bryan Beres was at the plate and a relief pitcher was inserted. On the first pitch, a mixup in signals put Stiles in motion to the plate and the pitch was in the dirt. Stiles ended up with a stolen base and scored. Another passed ball allowed McGlaughlin to score.
The Oaks will open up league play on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Baylands park. The opposing team is yet to be determined.
