The Sacred Heart Prep girls' soccer team got the deciding goal with under 30 seconds to play in the first half and held on for a 1-0 victory over host Priory to capture its third straight West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) title on Thursday in Portola Valley. The Gators improved to 8-0-1 in league (12-4-3 overall) and wrapped up the crown with only one match remaining. The Panthers (5-2-2, 10-3-4) needed a victory to have any hope of ending SHP's string of titles.
After missing on numerous chances in the first half, SHP got a break on a corner kick by Lauren Espeseth that bounced around in front of the Priory cage before senior Geena Graumann got a foot on it and found the back of the net.
Both teams had numerous chances to score in the second half, but outstanding defensive efforts by both squads prevented another goal. Priory's Eugenia Jernick just missed heading in a goal with 5:25 left after the Panthers stepped up their offense after intermission. Priory, however, needed two goals as SHP still could have won the title with a tie.
