Priory maintained its hold on second place in the West Bay Athletic League boys' soccer race following a closer-than-expected 4-3 victory over host King's Academy in Sunnyvale. The Panthers improved to 6-1, trailing only first-place Sacred Heart Prep (7-0-1). Priory will visit SHP on Friday (3 p.m.) with a chance to take over the league league.
Guillermo Talancon scoring the winning goal for the Panthers in the second half after John Jernick had tied the match at 3 with a goal. Freshman Austin Mirabella opened the scoring for Priory with a powerful header off Evan Filipczyk's corner kick. That cut the Panthers' deficit in half after King's had grabbed a 2-0 lead only 10 minutes into the match by taking advantage of two Priory mistakes.
Talancon later scored during a scramble in front of the net to deadlock the match at 2 heading into halftime. King's scored early in the second half for a 3-2 lead before Jernick and Talancon rescued the Panthers.
