Luke Maxwell scored twice and the Sacred Heart Prep boys soccer team beat Piedmont 2-0 in the first round of the CIF Regional Division IV Championships Tuesday in Atherton.

Third seeded Sacred Heart Prep (15-5-2) meets the winner of a later game between No. 2 Fowler and No. 7 University (San Francisco) on Thursday.

The Gators, who finished second behind Menlo in the West Bay Athletic League, created a scoring opportunity in the second minute. A corner kick led to a header just over the net.

Maxwell found himself with the ball along the right side in the 38th minute and deftly maneuvered into a good position, shooting past the goalie into an open net.

Perhaps the difference in the contest was Sacred Heart Prep’s ability to withstand Piedmont’s (15-4-2) through the first 15 minutes of the second half. Goalie Logan Aboudara made five saves during that period.

SHP defenders consistently got into passing lanes and allowed one open shot all day. A lot of credit goes to players such as Nate Pi-Sunyer, Carlos Deras, Luis Mendoza and Joe Shlafman.

Billy Thompson, Luca Suarez, Will Maxwell and Danny Barragan were also effective in what was really a team effort on defense.

Sacred Heart Prep started creating better scoring opportunities in the 56th minute, with a corner kick that the Highlanders’ goalie saved and two other close calls.

Maxwell had the ball along the left side in the 59th minute and recorded his second goal of the contest. The Gators began substituting frequently after that, with everybody getting a chance to keep Piedmont off the scoreboard.

In Division II, No. 6 Montgomery scored in the second half to sneak past No. 3 St. St. Francis. The top three seeds in the bracket all lost.

The Spartans (21-0-1) head to top-seeded Oak Ridge (14-0-3) in El Dorado Hills for a 5 p.m. match Thursday.

Oak Ridge has allowed five goals all season.

No. 7 St. Francis (15-1-5) beat No. 2 Carondelet 1-0 and will travel to play No. 3 Buchanan (19-2-1) at 3 p.m. Thursday.

In Division III, No. 3 Los Altos downed No. 6 Campolindo 3-1 to reach the semifinals. The Eagles (15-5-3) will travel to No. 2 Chico for a 5 p.m. match Thursday.

Los Altos has tied or won 12 of its past 13 matches, the only loss to undefeated Mountain View.
