The Pinewood girls basketball season has turned into the Elle Ladine show. One superlative performance after another.
On Saturday the University of Washington-bound senior came up with 36 points, 23 rebounds and five assists in a 58-43 win over San Leandro.
“After a game like that I feel like I watched the Red Zone for six hours on Sunday and didn’t do a damn thing,” Pinewood coach Doc Scheppler said. “We get so many easy baskets because of her.”
Ladine, who went into the game averaging 23 points and 15 rebounds on the season, was hot from the start, knocking down the first three 3-pointers she attempted as Pinewood (16-1) jumped out to a 15-3 lead with her accounting for 11 of those points.
Then she scored nine of Pinewood’s 17 second-quarter points, giving her 20 at the half.
San Leandro (17-5) pulled within 35-28 at halftime, but managed only four points in the third quarter as Pinewood increased its lead to 47-32.
Ladine scored eight of Pinewood’s 12 in the third quarter and eight of her team’s 11 in the fourth quarter.
Palo Alto 65, Gunn 40
Palo Alto (17-1) lit it up with a school record 18 3-pointers in the rivalry win over Gunn. Kaella Peters got off to a scorching start, making four consecutive 3s in the first quarter as the Vikings took a 20-5 lead at the end of the quarter.
Peters made six 3-pointers in all and scored 20 points
Freshman Natalie Neumann scored 12 points on four 3s, three of them in succession in the third quarter.Itzel Torres, who finished with 10 points, Nadia Brown and McKenna Rausch had two 3s while Ava Shi and Vienn Sheng had one each.
“We’re not super tall, but we space the floor well and pass well,” Palo Alto coach Scott Peters said. “We’ve developed a pretty good shooting team, 30% on 3s for the season.”
The win was the 15th in a row for Paly.
“We’re not looking at records, we’re looking to improve as a team,” Peters said.
Vallory Kuelker and Beverley Lamis scored 14 points apiece for Gunn (12-9), which has made tremendous progress this season after going a combined 5-70 over the past four seasons.
Santa Clara 59, Mountain View 51 (ot)
Mountain View scored five points in the final 17 seconds of regulation to force overtime but never scored again in a tough El Camino Division loss to the Bruins.
Santa Clara was up 50-46 when senior Janessa Iberra stole an inbound pass and was fouled on the way to the basket. She hit both of her foul shots and the Spartans immediately fouled.
Santa Clara hit the first shot and missed the second, with Ibarra grabbing the rebound, getting it to point guard Sydney Shimabukuro at midcourt.
Shimabukuro passed to senior Annie Eggleton, who lofted a long 3-pointer that hit the front rim, bounced up and fell through the net to tie it.
The Bruins outscored Mountain View 8-0 in the overtime.
Toki Morimoto scored 24 points to lead the Spartans (11-8, 6-4) while Lauren Dove added nine points and 11 rebounds.
