Nate Baxter and George Zaharias combined on a two-hitter and the Menlo-Atherton offense did just enough in a 2-1 nonleague baseball victory over host St. Francis on Wednesday.
Baxter and Zaharias had to work through nine walks and a hit by a pitch, stranding 10 baserunners. St. Francis only run came on a solo home run in the third by Johnny Tarantino.
The Bears (2-2) tied the score in the fourth. Max Coupe walked and went to third on an infield error. Rowan Barnes infield grounder plated Coupe.
M-A took the lead with a run in the fifth. With two outs, John Quinlan singled and Coupe followed with a triple.
Will Cronin collected two hits against the Lancers and has six hits in his first four games.
St. Francis had runners on base in all but the fifth inning. The Bears played error free defense and Baxter and Zaharias combined on 13 strikeouts.
The Bears are in the midst of six games against private schools, five from the West Catholic Athletic League. M-A hosts Serra at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Junior goalkeeper Julia Dellenbach recorded 12 saves as Gunn beat host Mountain View, 2-0, in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division game Wednesday.
The Titans (3-3-2) won their second game in as many days, this time keeping the league’s second-best offense out of the net.
Sophomore Koharu Msauda gave Gunn the lead with a first-half goal and the Titans matched Mountain View’s intensity the rest of the way
Gunn added a goal in the second half on a corner kick. Emerson Sweeney got the ball to junior Helena Detering, who kicked it into the net.
The Titan’s next match is at home against Santa Clara on Tuesday evening.
Girls water polo
Riley Hocker scored twice and recorded three assists to help Sacred Heart Prep beat visiting St. Ignatius, 11-2, in a West Catholic Athletic League match Wednesday.
Hocker scored twice in the final 1:46 of the first quarter to give SHP a 3-0 advantage. The Gators (6-1) eventually scored the game’s first five goals en route to the victory.
Brienz Lang added three goals and an assist for SHP, which hosts Leland in a nonleague match on Saturday morning. It’s the final home contest for the Gators, who will honor their seniors.
Paedrin Gillett recorded nine saves and had a save percentage of .818. She also had an assist.
Ella Woodhead had two goals and two assists, Ashley Penner scored twice and recorded an assist. Alexandra Szczerba also scored and had two assists. Maggie Stevens added an assist.
Boys water polo
Menlo School coach Jack Bowen was a lonely man on the pool deck Wednesday. He did not have a player to spare as all seven starters played the entire contest.
Greg Hilderbrand scored seven goals and recorded four steals as Menlo beat visiting Serra, 21-3, in a West Catholic Athletic League game.
Zayd Mahmoud recorded 11 saves and a game-best six assists for the Knights (7-2), who host Menlo-Atherton in a nonleague game Saturday.
Jack Murad and Michael Fang each added four goals while Ethan Babel had three and Tommy Kiesling scored a pair. Jackson Kay also scored and recorded four steals.
Also in the WCAL, Luke Weigle scored four times as Sacred Heart Prep beat visiting St. Ignatius, 18-2.
Gavin West and Hassen Hove each added three goals and Tyler Hogan recorded three assists.
Goalies Griff Price and Wyatt Stenson combined for 11 saves.
SHP hosts Bellarmine in a league contest Friday night.
Palo Alto topped host Homestead, 25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division contest Wednesday night.
The Vikings (3-0) host Los Gatos in a league match Friday night.
Gunn fell to host Monta Vista, 25-8, 25-16, 19-25, 25-15, in a SCVAL De Anza Division contest Wednesday night.
The Titans, who returned one player from last year’s CCS Division I championship team, are winless in their first year in the De Anza Division.
Monta Vista senior Samantha Dunn gave the Titans (0-4) plenty of trouble with 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage.
Gunn returns home to meet Homestead in a league contest Friday evening.
