FOR THE BIRDS ... AND PLANT SALE ... Master Gardeners Cynthia Butler and Vera Kark will talk about "Attracting Birds, Butterflies and Beneficial Insects to Mediterranean Garden" from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, 851 Center Drive. The free talk will be preceded (from 9 to 9:45 a.m.) and followed by a vegetable plant sale (broccoli, chard, spinach, cilantro, lettuce, ruby streak mustard, golden frilly mustard and peas), all $2 for a six-pack. COMMUNITY DAY ... Gamble Garden will open its paths to young and old for a free Community Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. Activities for kids include making flower arrangements (with the help of The Garden Club of Palo Alto) to take home; climbing on a fire truck or police car; or enjoying story time and crafts courtesy of the Palo Alto Children's Library. Adults can wander around the gardens on their own or with an "Explorer" map for kids. A plant sale will be held, featuring iris, succulents, succulent containers, salvias and more, all grown on site. OLIVE FESTIVAL ... —The 16th Annual Arts & Olive Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at Canada College, 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City. More than 80 vendors will offer olive-related products, olive and olive-oil tasting, as well as artwork and gifts. The event is free, but a $5 scholarship donation is suggested. SEEDS AND COLOR ... Mimi Clarke, former lead horticulturist at Filoli and now owner of Fiddle Fern Landscaping, will teach a couple of classes on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Filoli, 86 Canada Road, Woodside: From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. she will talk about "Seed Collecting and Preserving" ($40 for nonmembers, $35 for members); from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., she will lead a hands-on workshop on "Fall Planting for Spring Color" ($60 for nonmembers, $50 for members). NATURE'S GARDENS ... Historian Michael Svanevik will give a personalized tour of "Nature's Garden's," from Big Basin to Butano, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Filoli, 86 Canada Road, Woodside. Among the wonders are trees, giant ferns and delicate wild orchids. A reception will follow the presentation. Tickets are $35 for nonmembers, $25 for members (includes same-day admission to Filoli). MAINTAIN NATIVES ... Helen Popper, author of "California Native Gardening, a Month-by-Month Guide," will be the guest speaker for the Western Horticultural Society from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Her topic is "Maintaining Native Plants Throughout the Seasons," which involves how to select and site native plants and useful maintenance tips. LEARN TO SEW ... Christine Hopkins will teach a class on "Intermediate Sewing" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 10-31, at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, 701 Laurel St., Menlo Park. The hands-on class will work on techniques to expand and improve sewing, and make at least one project in class. Cost is $85 for non-Menlo Park residents, $64 for residents, plus $5 materials fee; sewing machines may be used during class for $20. FREE FABRIC ... The next FabMo free fabric distribution event is Thursday, Oct. 10, 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 12, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments are required, to help manage the crowds (Email gather.fabrix@me.com with preferred date and time), but some drop-in hours are included. The distribution, with a requested donation, takes place at 2423 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View. Volunteer greeters and sorters are also needed. Information: www.fabmo.org

COOL SEASON COLOR ... Master Gardener Roberta Barnes will offer a free talk on "Cool Season Color in the Garden" from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, at Avenidas, 450 Bryant St., Palo Alto.
