A round-up of Palo Alto government action this week

Board of Education (Aug. 16)

Retreat: The board discussed the district-wide plan, the PAUSD Promise, the redevelopment of Cubberley Community Center and upcoming board agendas at a retreat. Action: None

City Council (Aug. 19)

Matadero Creek: The council approved moving ahead with a $93,000 contract with Water Resource Associates Environmental Consultants to study the feasibility of converting the channelized Matadero Creek into an open space corridor. Yes: Cormack, DuBois, Filseth, Fine, Kniss No: Kou, Tanaka

Ventura: The council directed staff to return with an amended $367,112 contract with the firm Perkins+Will for additional services relating to the North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan.

Yes: DuBois, Filseth, Fine, Kniss, Kou No: Cormack, Filseth, Tanaka

VTA: The council authorized staff to submit a response letter to a recent report from the Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury pertaining to the governance structure of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

Yes: Unanimous

Council Finance Committee (Aug. 20)

Revenue measure: The committee agreed to dedicate funding from the potential 2020 business tax measure to transportation improvements. The committee also recommended that the council consider a business tax that is based on either employee counts or on square footage, as well as to explore a parcel tax based on square footage. Yes: Unanimous
