WINTER FRUIT TREE CARE ...
On Sunday, Feb. 3, Gamble Garden will host a talk on "Winter Maintenance of Deciduous Fruit Trees" from 9 to 11 a.m. Instructor Jeff Scroggin, who runs his own landscape management business, will talk about the tasks to perform in winter, such as pruning for different tree forms (open, columnar, espalier, fan) and types of pruning cuts. He also will address optimizing pruning for fruit production and how to thin fruit after it starts to form to maximize quality and quantity. Cost is $20 for members; $30 for nonmembers. VEGGIES YEAR-ROUND ... The UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County will offer a six-week course on "Success in the Year-round Vegetable Garden," starting Monday, Feb. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. A productive vegetable garden can provide delicious produce year-round, without being a full-time job. Learn how to get the most vegetables by applying science-based gardening methods that minimize environmental impacts. The class will be held at Palo Alto High School, 50 Embarcadero Road, in Room 1702.
