READY FOR RAIN ... Grassroots Ecology, a volunteer organization that stewards creeks and watersheds, has teamed with Gamble Garden to construct a rain garden. The group will install a 60-gallon rain barrel and a 265-gallon tank to capture rainwater on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 - 11 a.m. at 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. The goal of Grassroots Ecology's "Greening Urban Watersheds" program is to conserve water. Roads and roofs now cover about half of the permeable soils in our urban areas, and the runoff from these impermeable surfaces causes erosion and pollution. Rainwater capture reduces this impact and provides chlorine-free water that is free and good for soil and plant health, according to Grassroots Ecology.
