So much food, so little flavor

Hit or miss Mediterranean fast-casual food at Sajj in Mountain View

by Alissa Merksamer

Sajj Mediterranean in Mountain View feels more like a fueling station than a restaurant. With two food trucks, five restaurant locations (and more to come), it has done to Mediterranean food what Chipotle has done to Mexican food — made it fast, customizable and, too often, forgettable.

Having been to both the San Jose and Mountain View locations, I could not disagree more with this review. The food is a cut above typical fast food with enough variety to satisfy most people. My picky kids both enjoyed the rice bowls they got from the kids' menu. The falafel and the different shawarmas are tasty, especially when mixed together in a shawafel. The lentil soup is also good. For those like me who like spicy, it is simple enough to add the hot sauce they provide on the side to liven it up. Oh, and the portions are large enough that after lunch there dinner in the evening is not required.

Most important, the service is much better than what you would expect at a Chipotle type restaurant. The staff is very helpful in explaining how the system works and willing to make accommodations.

It's really unfair to say something like this ...

> it has done to Mediterranean food what Chipotle has done to Mexican food — made it fast, customizable and, too often, forgettable.

I don't get to Chipotle as often as I would like, but I do always think of it when I need something fast, simple, healthy and tasty. It is not really forgettable, at least to the millions of people who remember it enough to support what I imagine are hundreds of restaurants.

Chipotle has had some challenges recently, and this kind of taken for granted off-hand slam is not fair or accurate to either place - even if you are trying to communicate a negative experience. Just say what you are going to say, i.e. your honest experience and opinion and leave out the insults to places that are not being reviewed and where your own opinion is a kind of restaurant reviewers hearsay.

Wow, that's quite a hit piece. Restaurant preference is of course subjective, but as a regular customer of Sajj, i'd say the review is as close to objectively wrong as you can get. Ordering intimidating? Didn't you say it is "just like at Chipotle"? It is no more or less confusing. But the worst inaccuracy starts with the title, and the claims of little flavor or blandness. That's just absurd - Sajj is great because it of the bold flavors - the peppers, the pomegranate chicken, tangy cabbage, the garlic paste..

The falafel is dry though.
