TREE ADVICE ... Learn about how to care for Japanese maple trees on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in Room 12 of the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. The De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will present a program from Arnie Cornez on selection, care and pruning of Japanese maple trees. Cornez is a longtime volunteer at Hakone Estate & Gardens in Saratoga, handling aesthetic pruning of Japanese maples and fruit trees. The program is free, and refreshments will be served. GLOBAL ORCHIDS ... See and buy orchids on Saturday, Jan. 23, and Sunday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Ave., Redwood City. During the Peninsula Orchid Society's annual show and sale, titled Orchids Around the World, attendees can see blooming orchids, attend seminars, watch demonstrations and purchase orchids.
