PLANT VEGGIES NOW ... UC Master Gardeners will offer a free workshop — Plant Veggies Now! Making a Spring Vegetable Garden— from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, 851 Center Drive, Palo Alto. The workshop will deal with preparing wet soil, direct seeding and transplanting. Master Gardeners will be available after the workshop to answer questions and participants can also stroll around the waterwise and edible demo gardens. START A GARDEN ... Pam Scott, who grows much of her own food, will teach a class on "Starting a Veggie Garden" from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Common Ground Education Center, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto. DISPOSE OF TOXIC WASTE ... Palo Alto residents can drop off everything from aerosols to syringes at the monthly Household Hazardous Waste events, next held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 4. Items can be taken to the regional Water Quality Control Plant, 2501 Embarcadero Way, Palo Alto. Bring proof of residency (driver's license or car registration). COMFORT FOOD, VOILA ... Yannette Fichou Edwards, who was born in France, will share family recipes learned from her grandmere in a class called "French Comfort Food" from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Palo Alto High School, Room 103, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. She'll include Warm Goat Cheese Salad with homemade hazelnut vinaigrette and toasted nuts; a Golden Filet of Sole with almonds, butter and parsley; Roasted Broccoli with toasted breadcrumbs and capers; and Silky Espresso Chocolate "Pots of Crème."
