GARDEN PLANNING ... John Jeavons, executive director of Ecology Action and author of "How to Grow More Vegetables," will teach a pair of classes on Saturday, March 12, at Common Ground Education Center, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto. "Planning Your Garden," from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., deals with learning how to use the charts in his book and getting seedlings started at the right time. "Compost Crops and Rotations," from 2 to 4 p.m., will cover maximizing garden output over three years. Cost for each class is $31. Information: 650-493-6072 or www.commongroundinpaloalto.org

TREE WALKS, PLANTING ... Canopy is hosting a California Arbor Week Festival and tree planting at Eleanor Pardee Park, 851 Center Drive, Palo Alto, on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Featured events include a ceremonial planting at 9:30 a.m., tree-planting demonstration at 10 a.m., kid-friendly tree walks at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and a competitive tree-climbing demonstration (tentative) at 11 a.m. An "Ask the Arborist" booth will be available all day. GARDEN DESIGN ... An indoor/outdoor class on "Garden Design" will be held Saturday, March 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Filoli, 86 Canada Road, Woodside. Emphasis will be on working with the space you have, learning to combine plants successfully, and choosing the right plant for the right place. Cost is $40 for nonmembers, $35 for members. CARING FOR MAPLES ... Bruce Andrews, an authority on Japanese maples, will be featured at the next meeting of the De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society on Wednesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. The group meets in Room 12 of the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. Rhododendrons that do poorly in this area will also be discussed. Information: www.deanza-ars.com

ALL ABOUT SOLAR … A panel of experts will talk about "Everything Under the Sun: Learn About Solar Energy for Your Home" on Thursday, March 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Oshman Family JCC, Conference Room F401, 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto.
