REAL ESTATE CLASSES ... Marshall Reddick Realty staff is offering a series of real estate classes through the City of Palo Alto's Community Services Department. The first, "Own Your First Home or Rental Property 101," will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, in the Fireside Room at Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. "How to Pay Off Your Mortgage Quickly" is slated for Saturday, Feb. 19, also at Lucie Stern. "Own Real Estate Without Qualifying or Without Funds" will be offered Saturday, March 19, at Cubberley Community Center, Room A7, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Each class runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $49 for residents or $56 for nonresidents. Information: www.cityofpaloalto.org/enjoy.

DETECTORS REQUIRED ... Every home in California that burns fossil fuels — including gas — will be required to have a carbon monoxide detector installed by July 2011. But don't expect the CO cops to come knocking: Enforcement is limited to when a home is sold or one applies for a building permit for renovations. Information: www.cityofpaloalto.org/fire or Gordon Simpkinson at 650-329-2347.

FREE FABRIC ... Crafters and artists may come to the FabMo Creativity Center Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 6 to 8, for free designer fabric samples, at 2423 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View. Appointments are required (e-mail gather.fabrix@me.com), but some drop-in hours have been added. Information: fabrix@fabmo.org.
