Out of the mud, a bike passage could rise

City, residents join forces to establish permanent underground passageway to Baylands

Opening this bike path year-round is a great idea. It should be the major bike route between the south Palo Alto neighborhoods and the jobs in the east Shoreline area (Google, Microsoft, etc.). The alternative route of crossing Highway 101 at the San Antonio Road overpass is kind of risky during commute hours because of the narrow road and all the aggressive car drivers entering and exiting the freeway and the poor lighting during the winter.

There appears to be both a Commission and the City's Planning Department working on the same thing but they are obviously not getting together on this.

Over 100 residents met at Palo Verde School to discuss changes to the Comprehensive Plan around East Meadow Circle and Fabian Way. This large group recommended changes that would include an upgrade to the pedestrian/bicycle path under Hwy 101 to the Baylands.

I would suggest the Parks and Recs Commission get together with the Planning Department to coordinate a similar upgrade plan otherwise we will have two City entities vying for their particular plan to be considered by the City Council.

Get together guys!!!

Don't hold your breath, things take a very long time to happen in Palo Alto. First there will have to be studies, committees, experts, bonds,neighborhood activists, and who knows what else. It sounds great to me, but then of course I am only a member of the public.

A bike tax? Nah, a special tax on cranky old men who wouldn't be caught dead riding a bicycle should do just fine :-)

Good luck on getting the Adobe Creek underpass fixed. My wife complained about the fences on the Oregon bike overpass blocking bikes with trailers fifteen (15) years ago. Nothing was ever done except getting a letter from the city saying they would look into it. Maybe LASIK would help.

Cranky old man? Not hardly. I'm happy as a clam to have lived long enough to see every one of my beliefs validated by the real world while the vapourings of the progressives, the Greenies, and the LibLudd Malthusians blown away because of their lack of an anchor in reality.
As for Bike riding, My old Schwinn piled up the miles delivering the Sacramento Union [now sadly dead again] I grew out of that phase and an yway the world is not ready for Wallis in Spandex.

The conservatives hate bicycles. They would rather have more roads, more cars on the road, more oil imports, more middle east wars, and, most importantly, more profits for the oil companies. Bicycle commuting ruins all that. The cost of this bike path is a pittance compared to the conservative alternative.

We're not talking about a bridge to nowhere. This is a direct route between homes and jobs that people are going to use every work day.

Most of the money for this project will come from a bicycle program account which is admintistered by the VTA. What the article failed to mention is that although VTA hands out this money, it is not part of its transit budget. The source is a state account that is fed from state and local tax money. So, Walter, every time a bicylist pays sales tax on an inner tube or pays income tax, some of that tax money goes into transportation accounts. The majority of that money is spent to build and maintain freeways from which bicyclists are prohibited, and a very tiny percentage of it is spent on facilities that help bicyclists get under, over or around those freeways that they paid for. Mile for mile bike facilities are very cheap compared to freeways, and they require much less maintenance. This one is badly needed and I hope it gets built soon.
