SEEDS FROM FAVORITES ... UCCE Master Gardeners will offer a free workshop on "Saving Seeds from Your Garden" on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a garden tour until 1 p.m. at the Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, 851 Center Drive, Palo Alto. NOT JUST FOR EARLY BIRDS? ... The City of Palo Alto is offering a free Worm Composting Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 6, 10 to 11:30 a.m. After attending a workshop, Palo Alto residents are eligible for a voucher for a Biostack compost bin at reduced cost. BASIC GARDEN DESIGN ... Patricia Evans will teach a class on "Garden Design for Homeowners" on Tuesdays, Sept. 9-Nov. 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Palo Alto High School, Room 1708, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. The class covers basics from color and texture to materials and installation. Class includes a Saturday field trip to reinforce concepts and plant-selection criteria. The Sunset Western Garden Book (2007 edition) is a required text, and a list of tools and supplies will be provided to students who wish to draft a plan. Cost is $135. SAN MATEO GARDEN TOUR ... Four gardens in the Hillsborough-San Mateo area, including the seldom-open Carolands estate, will be on display during the San Mateo Arboretum Society's 33rd annual Fall Garden Tour on Saturday, Sept. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 same day, with children under 14 free.
