Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest Winners: Pixel perfect
Winners of the Palo Alto Weekly's 16th annual photo contest explore both digital and traditional techniques
This year's entrants in the Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest have once again embraced the range of possibilities that photography offers, including use of digital manipulation and exploring the capabilities of digital cameras.
But as the contest judges found, the ingredients of captivating images went far beyond the manipulation of pixels. The best photographers -- as commentators on the world -- use their well-honed skills of having an eye for and a sense of mood, irony, humor, emotion, beauty.
This year, 159 entrants submitted a total of 291 photos -- capturing moments as humble as home life and as exhilarating as foreign travel.
Handling the difficult task of coming up with the winners, our four judges were Norbert von der Groeben, the Weekly's chief photographer;
Dave Hibbard, a fine-art photographer; Angela Filo, a journalism teacher and photographer; and Brigitte Carnochan, a fine-art and documentary-style photographer.
Sponsors of the contest included University Art, the Palo Alto Art Center, Jungle Digital and Bear Images.
A reception honoring the winning photographers will be held Wednesday, June 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Palo Alto Art Center.
